Santa Maria is a small island with a short list of places to stay, and the choice comes down to three areas. Vila do Porto, the only town, has the island's two hotels (the 87-room Hotel Colombo and the 15-room Charming Blue) plus the restaurants, the marina and the dive centres. Praia Formosa, ten minutes away, has beach houses a step from the Azores' only pale-sand beach. The rural interior and the parishes of Almagreira and Santo Espírito have quintas and country houses for travellers who want quiet and a view. Nowhere is more than 25 minutes from anywhere else, so the area you pick is about mood, not logistics.
Below: what each area is like, the properties you can book with us, who each one suits, and the practical points (car, season, how many nights) that matter on this island.
How Accommodation Works on Santa Maria
Santa Maria has about 5,400 residents and a tourism scene built around a handful of operators, so there are no resorts and no hotel chains. The whole island offers two hotels, a youth hostel and a few dozen guesthouses, holiday homes and rural tourism houses, most of them small, family-run and closed or reduced in the deep winter months. Total capacity is tiny by São Miguel standards, which has two consequences: in July and August, and during the Maré de Agosto music festival at Praia Formosa in the third week of August, everything books out weeks ahead; and outside summer you often have a house or a whole quinta to yourself at a fraction of the price.
The island is 17 km long, with the airport and Vila do Porto in the south-west, Praia Formosa on the south coast, and the villages of Santo Espírito, Maia and São Lourenço spread around the east and north-east. A rental car is close to essential for any stay, because there is no useful public transport and the beaches, trails and viewpoints are scattered; see our guide to getting around Santa Maria and its tours if you would rather be driven. Flights arrive from Ponta Delgada in 25 minutes and from Lisbon a few times a week, and the airport is five minutes from Vila do Porto.
Area 1: Vila do Porto, the Town
Vila do Porto is the oldest settlement in the Azores and the only place on Santa Maria with a real choice of restaurants, cafés, a supermarket and nightlife, such as it is. It sits on a ridge above the harbour and marina, with the 16th-century Fortress of São Brás at the seaward end and whitewashed houses with painted trims along the main street. Staying here means walking to dinner, being five minutes from the airport, and having the dive centres, the whale-watching boats and the tour operators on your doorstep. The trade-off is that the beaches and pools are a drive away.
HOTEL COLOMBO, VILA DO PORTO
The island's largest hotel and its best seller: 87 air-conditioned rooms with balconies, an outdoor pool, spa area, bar and kids' zone, by the ocean on the edge of town and five minutes from the marina. The safe choice for families and for anyone who wants full hotel services. Continental breakfast included.
See Hotel Colombo →CHARMING BLUE, VILA DO PORTO
A restored manor house on the main street turned into a 15-room boutique hotel, with a pool and sun terrace, the Mesa d'Oito restaurant, a small gym and free parking. The pick for couples who want character and a walk to dinner. Breakfast included; about 4 km from the airport.
See Charming Blue →Budget travellers have the Azores Youth Hostel in Vila do Porto, part of the regional hostel network, with dorms and private rooms a short walk from the centre, and several guesthouses and apartments in the town, including Casa dos Magalhães. For a stay of two or three nights with tours, boats and dinners booked, the town is the right base.
Area 2: Praia Formosa, the Beach
Praia Formosa is the reason many people come to Santa Maria: a long curve of pale sand, unusual in an archipelago of black beaches, backed by a small cluster of houses, a café or two and the stage that hosts the Maré de Agosto festival. It is ten minutes by car from Vila do Porto and the airport in the parish of Almagreira, and the handful of holiday houses here are the island's only true beachfront accommodation. Choose it for a swim before breakfast, for families with children who want sand rather than rock pools, and for the quiet once the day visitors leave. You will drive to dinner, or cook.
VILLA NATURA, PRAIA FORMOSA
A two-bedroom house in a small condominium beside the Figueiral-Prainha nature reserve, with direct access to Praia Formosa and a garden overlooking the beach. Built around sustainability (energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, double glazing) and awarded the regional Miosótis Azores eco label. Ideal for a couple or a family of four who want the beach on their doorstep.

A well-equipped holiday house across the street from the sand, two minutes on foot from the sea, with sea views and a full kitchen, about ten minutes' drive from Vila do Porto. Note the stairs if mobility is a concern.
See A Casa da Xã →Area 3: The Countryside and the East
Away from the town and the beach, Santa Maria is farmland, dry-stone walls, red clay plateaus and whitewashed hamlets, and the rural tourism houses here are where the island shows its character. Almagreira, the parish between Vila do Porto and Praia Formosa, has quintas on the slopes with views to the sea. Santo Espírito, in the south-east, is the most traditional parish, a 20-minute drive from town, and the base closest to the Maia vineyard terraces, the Aveiro waterfall and the Gonçalo Velho lighthouse. São Lourenço, on the north-east coast, is the island's most photographed bay, an amphitheatre of vine terraces dropping to natural pools, with a few summer houses to rent. Choose the countryside for silence, stars and space; expect to drive 10 to 25 minutes for every meal out.
QUINTA DO FALCÃO, ALMAGREIRA
A classified rural tourism country house at Lugar do Falcão in Almagreira, with nine rooms and 18 beds, between Vila do Porto and Praia Formosa. Good for groups and families who want one house for everyone and the beach ten minutes away.
See Quinta do Falcão →VILLA IN NATURE, SANTO ESPÍRITO
A holiday home in Santo Espírito, the island's most traditional parish, close to the Maia terraces, the Aveiro waterfall and the hiking trails of the south-east. For travellers who want the quiet side of the island and do not mind the drive to town.
See Villa in Nature →Which Area Should You Choose?
For a first visit of two or three nights with activities booked, stay in Vila do Porto: you are near the airport, the boats and the restaurants, and every sight is within half an hour. For a beach holiday or a family with young children, Praia Formosa, and book early for summer. For a week of hiking, reading and doing very little, a rural house in Almagreira or Santo Espírito. Divers heading to the Ambrósio seamount and the Formigas should stay in Vila do Porto, where the dive centres and the harbour are. Couples wanting the most atmospheric address on the island should look at Charming Blue first.
If you are visiting Santa Maria as a two-night add-on to São Miguel, which is how most people do it, Vila do Porto is the practical answer and Hotel Colombo or Charming Blue the usual picks; the island's two- and three-day tour packages, which bundle transfers, the full-day island tour and a hike or a boat trip, work from either hotel.

Book early for July and August and for the Maré de Agosto week, when the island's few hundred beds fill with festival-goers and Azorean families; the rest of the year you can book a week or two ahead, and in winter many houses offer long-stay rates while some close altogether. Most rural houses and holiday homes have a minimum stay of two or three nights in summer. Rent a car with the accommodation: there is no public transport to speak of, taxis are few, and the drive from the airport to anywhere on the island is under 25 minutes. Breakfast is included at both hotels and at most guesthouses; the self-catering houses at Praia Formosa and in the countryside have kitchens, and the supermarket is in Vila do Porto. Finally, Santa Maria is the sunniest and driest Azorean island, so a house with outdoor space earns its keep from May to October in a way it would not on São Miguel.

Where is the best place to stay in Santa Maria, Azores?
Vila do Porto for most visitors, because it has the island's two hotels, the restaurants, the harbour and the airport within five minutes. Praia Formosa for a beach stay, and a rural house in Almagreira or Santo Espírito for quiet. Nothing on the island is more than about 25 minutes' drive from anything else.
How many hotels are there in Santa Maria?
Two: Hotel Colombo (87 rooms, pool, spa) and Charming Blue (15 rooms, boutique, pool), both in Vila do Porto. The rest of the island's accommodation is guesthouses, holiday homes, rural tourism houses and a youth hostel.
Is there a hotel on the beach in Santa Maria?
No hotel, but there are holiday houses at Praia Formosa with direct or across-the-street access to the sand, such as Villa Natura and A Casa da Xã. They are the island's only beachfront accommodation and book out early in summer.
Do I need a car if I stay in Vila do Porto?
For the town itself, no. To reach the beaches, the natural pools, São Lourenço and the trails, yes, or book the full-day island tour and the guided hikes, which include pick-up. There is no useful public transport on the island.
How many nights should I stay in Santa Maria?
Two or three nights covers the island tour, a hike, a boat trip or dive and time on the beach. A week suits divers in season, hikers doing the Grande Rota, or anyone who wants a slow beach holiday.
When should I book accommodation in Santa Maria?
Months ahead for July and August and for the Maré de Agosto festival in the third week of August, when the island's limited beds sell out. Spring and autumn can be booked a couple of weeks ahead. In winter some houses close and others offer long-stay rates.
Is Santa Maria expensive to stay in?
Prices are moderate by Azorean standards outside summer and rise sharply in July and August because supply is small. Self-catering houses are good value for families, and the youth hostel is the budget option in Vila do Porto.
Can I stay in Santa Maria as a day trip from São Miguel?
You can visit for the day on the first and last SATA flights with the full-day tour in between, but staying two nights is far better: the island's charm is in the quiet evenings, the beach after the day visitors leave and a swim at São Lourenço in the morning light.
