Azores Honeymoon Guide: Islands, Hotels & Itineraries

QUICK ANSWER

The Azores work as a honeymoon if you want crater lakes, hot springs, whales and small hotels instead of a beach resort. São Miguel is the base for most couples (thermal spas in Furnas, sunset at Mosteiros, private boat trips from Vila Franca), Pico adds vineyards and a volcano, and Terceira adds a UNESCO town. Nonstop flights from Boston take about five hours.

Seven nights on São Miguel is the simplest plan; ten nights across two or three islands is the one most couples end up choosing. Our honeymoon planner builds either around your dates, with hotels, car, flights and private experiences included.

Is the Azores the Right Honeymoon for You?

Be honest about what you want from the trip before you fall for the photos. The Azores are not a lie-on-the-sand destination: beaches are black volcanic sand or lava rock pools, the sea is 17°C to 24°C depending on the month, and a cloudy afternoon is always possible. What the islands offer instead is a week where every day has a different setting, most of it outdoors and most of it without crowds, at a distance from the US East Coast that is shorter than a flight to California.

Couples who love it are the ones who want to do things together: drive a crater rim road, soak in a thermal pool at night, sail out to see sperm whales, walk a coastal trail to a waterfall, and eat well without dressing up. If your ideal honeymoon is a swim-up bar and 30°C every day, look at Madeira or the Algarve instead. If it is a fortnight of scenery with a bathrobe and a hot spring at the end of each day, keep reading.

Which Islands to Choose

São Miguel is where most honeymoons start and where many stay. It has the international airport, the widest choice of hotels, the Furnas thermal valley, the Sete Cidades and Fogo crater lakes, the tea plantations and the best restaurant scene. A week here is not too long.

Pico is the romantic second island: a 2,351 metre volcano, UNESCO-listed vineyards planted inside black lava walls, wine tastings at the cooperatives, and views across the channel to Faial and São Jorge. Hotels are small (villa villages and converted stone houses rather than resorts), which is the appeal.

Terceira suits couples who want history alongside the landscape. Angra do Heroísmo is a UNESCO World Heritage city of pastel streets and a marina, the island has the Algar do Carvão lava tube and the Serra do Cume viewpoint, and it is 45 minutes by air from São Miguel.

Faial and São Jorge are the quiet options, reached by ferry from Pico in summer: Horta's marina and the Capelinhos volcano on Faial, the fajãs and cheese of São Jorge. Add them to a Pico stay rather than as separate destinations.

Flores is the remote one, all waterfalls and lakes, with an extra flight to get there. Consider it for a second visit or for a couple who already know they prefer wild to convenient.

Where to Stay: Honeymoon Hotels by Island

On São Miguel the romantic addresses cluster in three places. In Furnas, Octant Furnas has its own thermal spa and sits among hydrangeas at the edge of the valley, and Terra Nostra Garden Hotel lets guests use the park's iron-rich thermal pool outside public hours, which is the reason to stay there rather than visit. Furnas Lake Villas offers cedar bungalows in the forest above the lake for couples who want to be left alone. On the north coast, Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort has fourteen villas with direct access to a surf beach at Ribeira Grande. On the south coast near Lagoa, White Exclusive Suites & Villas is a cliff-top property with a saltwater infinity pool above the Atlantic and is the closest the island comes to a classic honeymoon hotel. In Ponta Delgada itself, Octant Ponta Delgada has a rooftop pool over the marina and puts the restaurants within walking distance.

On Pico, look at Lava Homes in Santo Amaro (a village of modern stone villas with a yoga room), Aldeia da Fonte on the south coast (an eco-retreat in a wooded cove with sea pools) and Pico Terramar & Spa in Madalena, near the ferry and the vineyards. On Terceira, most couples stay in or just outside Angra do Heroísmo so that dinner is a walk away.

Whatever you choose, book breakfast in and dinner out, and ask for a room with a terrace: the evenings, when the day-trippers are gone and the mist comes down over the calderas, are the part you will remember.

Seven Romantic Experiences Worth Booking

A thermal pool after dark. Poça da Dona Beija in Furnas is open until late and lit at night; the iron-rich water is around 39°C. Caldeira Velha, in the forest below Lagoa do Fogo, is the daytime alternative with a waterfall pool. Bring old swimwear: the water stains light fabrics.

Sunset from the water. A sailing boat or a private RIB out of Vila Franca do Campo or Ponta Delgada in the last two hours of light, usually with a glass of Pico wine on board, is the single most requested honeymoon booking we make.

Sunset over the Mosteiros Islets off São Miguel Island, with visitors standing among volcanic rocks beside the Atlantic Ocean.

Whale watching with a biologist. Sperm whales live off the islands all year and blue, fin and sei whales pass through in spring. Choose a licensed boat with a marine biologist and, if you prefer privacy, a private marine wildlife charter.

A private island tour. One guide, one vehicle, your pace: Sete Cidades and the west coast one day, Furnas and the tea plantations another. It costs more than a group van tour and it is the difference between a honeymoon and a bus trip.

Visitors sit on rocks facing Salto do Cabrito waterfall near Ribeira Grande, surrounded by steep volcanic walls and dense vegetation.

A hot tub in a pineapple greenhouse. Herdade do Ananás near Ponta Delgada rents a private jacuzzi inside its glasshouses, with the pineapples growing around you. It is exactly as odd and as good as it sounds.

Dinner at the edge of the sea. Restaurants at Mosteiros and along the south coast serve grilled limpets, fresh tuna, local beef and the sweet Azorean pineapple with a view of the sunset; ask your planner for a table booking on the night you arrive.

A wine day on Pico. Tastings at the Madalena cooperative and small producers among the lava-walled vineyards of Criação Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, followed by a swim in the natural pools below.

Two Itineraries That Work

Seven nights, São Miguel only. Nights one and two in Ponta Delgada to land softly: the town, the marina, a sunset sail. Nights three to five in Furnas: Terra Nostra park, the lake, a cozido lunch cooked in the ground, Dona Beija at night, the Nordeste coast on a day trip. Nights six and seven on the north or west coast: Sete Cidades from the rim, Mosteiros for sunset, Caldeira Velha and Lagoa do Fogo on the way back to the airport. One car, three hotels, no flights in between.

Ten nights, São Miguel and Pico (with Faial). Five nights on São Miguel following the plan above in compressed form, then a 40 minute flight to Pico for four nights: vineyards and cooperatives, a whale watching trip from Lajes or Madalena, a day on Faial by ferry to see Horta and Capelinhos, and the Pico summit at dawn if one of you is a hiker. Fly back to São Miguel for a final night near the airport. Add Terceira in place of Pico if history appeals more than wine.

Best Time for an Azores Honeymoon

June to September is the safe bet: warmest sea, longest days, hydrangeas in flower from late June, the ferries between Pico, Faial and São Jorge running daily, and whale watching at its most reliable. It is also the busiest period, so book hotels three to four months ahead for a summer wedding.

May and October are the quieter shoulder months and often the best value. The thermal pools are at their most appealing when the air is cooler, the spring whale migration peaks in April and May, and hotel availability is easy. Winter honeymoons are possible (the islands stay green and mild, rarely below 12°C), but expect rain on some days, plan around the hot springs rather than the beach, and skip the ferries.

Getting There and Getting Around

From the US, Azores Airlines flies nonstop from Boston to Ponta Delgada in about five hours, several days a week year-round, with additional seasonal routes from the East Coast and connections through Lisbon. From Canada, seasonal nonstops operate from Toronto. Once on the islands, a rental car is the way to travel on São Miguel, Terceira and Pico; inter-island flights take 35 to 50 minutes and the summer ferries link Pico, Faial and São Jorge. Our packages include the car and, on multi-island trips, the inter-island flights.

How Our Honeymoon Planner Works

Tell us your wedding date, how many nights you have and whether you want one island or several. A local planner, someone who lives on São Miguel and has eaten in the restaurants and slept in the hotels, sends back a proposal with flights, hotels, car and a first draft of experiences. You adjust it, we book it, and the same person stays on WhatsApp during the trip if a boat is cancelled by weather or you want to add a spa afternoon. Room upgrades, a bottle on arrival and a late checkout on the last morning are the kind of details we ask hotels for on your behalf.

Azores Honeymoon: FAQ

Which Azores island is best for a honeymoon?

São Miguel, for hotels, hot springs, restaurants and direct flights. Pico is the best second island for couples who want vineyards, a volcano and quiet villas. Terceira suits couples who want a historic town.

How many days do you need for an Azores honeymoon?

Seven nights on São Miguel is a full trip. Ten to twelve nights lets you add Pico (with Faial by ferry) or Terceira without rushing.

Is the Azores a good honeymoon destination in October or November?

October is one of the best months: quieter, still mild, hot springs at their best and good hotel availability. November brings more rain and the ferries stop, so plan around São Miguel's spas and lakes rather than the sea.

Are there luxury or adults-only hotels in the Azores?

There are boutique and five-star properties on São Miguel, including cliff-top villas with infinity pools and thermal spa hotels in Furnas, and villa villages on Pico. The islands do not have large resorts, which most honeymooners consider a plus. Ask our planner about adults-only options for your dates.

How long is the flight from the US to the Azores?

About five hours nonstop from Boston to Ponta Delgada with Azores Airlines, with seasonal nonstops from other East Coast cities and from Toronto.

Can we swim in the sea on an Azores honeymoon?

Yes, from June to October in natural lava pools and on black sand beaches. Water temperature peaks at around 23°C to 24°C in August and September.

What is the most romantic thing to do in the Azores?

A sunset sail off São Miguel followed by a night soak in the thermal pools at Furnas is the combination couples mention most. A private jacuzzi in a pineapple greenhouse is the surprise favourite.

Does Azores Getaways offer honeymoon packages?

Yes. Every honeymoon is built as a tailor-made trip: flights, hotels, car and experiences chosen for your dates, with a dedicated local planner who handles bookings before and during the trip.
