São Jorge Island Itinerary: 2 to 3 Days

SÃO JORGE ISLAND GUIDE

São Jorge is 55 km long and about 8 km wide, with most of its key sights spread along the north and south coasts. Two full days covers the essentials: the north coast fajã hike to Santo Cristo, the south coast from Velas to Fajã dos Vimes, and the western tip. Three days allows you to add the eastern end (Topo, Urzelina) and a second activity such as a boat tour, whale watching, or canyoning.

Rental car: Essential for this itinerary  |  Best season: May to October  |  Base: Velas (south coast)

Day 1: The North Coast Fajã Trail

The north coast hike is the single most important experience on São Jorge and deserves a full day. Start early (8:00 to 8:30 am) to avoid heat on the trail and to have time at the destination.

Morning: Drive to Fajã dos Cubres

From Velas, drive east along the EN1-1A and then north on the road to Fajã dos Cubres. The road descends steeply to the north coast, and the views from the lookouts above the fajã are already striking before you start walking. Fajã dos Cubres is a wide, flat coastal plateau with a lagoon and a small cluster of houses. This is the starting point for the trail to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo.

Mid-Morning: Hike to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo

The trail between Fajã dos Cubres and Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo (2.5 km, approximately 1 to 1.5 hours one way) runs along the base of the cliffs on a coastal path. The terrain is sometimes rocky and narrow. The trail ends at one of the most dramatically positioned and remote places in the Azores: a flat lava plateau with a natural clam lagoon, a surf break, and a handful of houses and a small café that can only be reached on foot or by motorbike.

Allow 3 to 4 hours for the round trip including time at the destination.

GUIDED HIKING TOURS

If you prefer a guided version of this hike with a local guide who knows the trail, boat transfers, and the fajã's clam ecology, guided hiking tours are available.

Afternoon: Ponta dos Rosais or Velas

After returning to Fajã dos Cubres and driving back toward Velas, two options work well for the afternoon depending on energy levels:

Option A: Continue west from Velas to Ponta dos Rosais on the western tip of the island. The road ends at the abandoned lighthouse, and the cliffs here are among the most dramatic on São Jorge. The drive from Velas is about 25 minutes.

Option B: Return to Velas for a late lunch and an afternoon exploring the town. The Jardim da República, the waterfront, and the natural pools near the hotel are all within walking distance. The view of Mount Pico from the waterfront is best in the late afternoon.

Evening: Dinner in Velas

Restaurante Acor and Clube Naval de Velas are both reliable dinner options in Velas. Book ahead in summer.

Day 2: South Coast, Fajã dos Vimes, and Calheta

Morning: Fajã dos Vimes

Drive east from Velas along the south coast (EN1-1A) toward Fajã dos Vimes, roughly 25 minutes. The road descends steeply to the fajã, a small and sheltered plateau on the south coast. Café Nunes here operates Europe's only commercial coffee plantation: the microclimate in the fajã is warm enough to grow Coffea arabica, which is remarkable at this latitude. Have breakfast or morning coffee at the café, explore the plantation, and walk the small path toward the coast.

Late Morning: Drive East to Topo

Continue east to the tip of the island at Topo. Topo Islet (connected to São Jorge by a narrow causeway) is a protected reserve and a good birdwatching spot. The small community of Topo has views back along the length of the island and toward Pico and Faial.

Afternoon: Urzelina

Drive back west to Urzelina on the south coast. The church tower left standing after the 1808 lava flow is the most striking visual on this part of the island: the eruption buried the surrounding village but left the stone tower upright. There are boat tours from Urzelina into the sea caves formed by the same lava flow, which is one of the better activity options on the island.

⛵ URZELINA BOAT TOURS

Boat tours from Urzelina enter the sea caves and volcanic coastal formations created by the 1808 eruption. Tours run approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

Evening: Dinner outside Velas

Restaurante Fornos de Lava between Urzelina and Velas is worth visiting for its wood-fired food and direct views of Pico. O Branquinho in Rosais (north coast, a short drive from Velas) is a local favorite for grilled fish and meat.

Day 3 (Optional): Activities and North Coast

A third day gives you time to add an activity that the two-day itinerary leaves out, and to revisit any part of the north coast you want to see again.

Morning: Activity of Choice

Canyoning, coasteering, whale watching, and snorkeling tours all run out of Velas and take half a day. This is the morning to do whichever activity you didn't have time for in the first two days. Whale watching is particularly well-suited to a morning departure, with operators launching at 8:00 to 9:00 am.

Afternoon: UNIQUEIJO Cheese Factory

The UNIQUEIJO cooperative factory in Santo Amaro, on the north side of the island near the central ridge, offers guided tours that follow the cheese production process from milk to aging room. The tour ends at the factory shop, where you can buy directly at producer prices. It is the best place to buy São Jorge DOP cheese at every aging level, including the harder 7-month and older versions not always found in Velas supermarkets.

Late Afternoon: Natural Pools, Velas

The natural pools just outside Velas are the best place to end an afternoon on the island. The water is calm and clear, and the position looks directly at Mount Pico across the channel. If the weather is good, an hour here before dinner is hard to improve on.

Practical Notes for This Itinerary

A rental car is essential. The north coast road down to Fajã dos Cubres and the road to Ponta dos Rosais are both narrow and require careful driving, but they are paved and manageable. The trail from Fajã dos Cubres to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo is one-way by foot; you retrace your steps.

Start the Day 1 hike as early as possible. The trail is sun-exposed on sections and becomes warm by mid-morning in summer. Carry at least 1.5 liters of water per person and wear trail shoes rather than sandals.

Restaurants in Velas can be busy in summer and some close one day per week. Calling ahead or checking the previous day is worth doing for dinner reservations.

São Jorge Island Vacation Packages

Flights, accommodation, and rental car arranged together. São Jorge pairs well with São Miguel for a 6-night trip, or with Faial and Pico for the Triangle Islands circuit.
