Where to Stay on Graciosa Island, Azores
Graciosa has limited accommodation by Azorean standards. The total number of beds on the island is small, and in July and August the best properties book out weeks in advance. Outside peak season, availability is reasonable and prices are lower than comparable properties on São Miguel or Faial. The choice of where to stay is straightforward: Santa Cruz da Graciosa is the most practical base for most visitors; Vila da Praia suits those who prioritize the beaches and windmill experience over restaurant and service access.
Main areas: Santa Cruz da Graciosa, Vila da Praia | Peak season: July to August | Book ahead: At least 3 to 4 weeks in peak season
Santa Cruz da Graciosa vs. Vila da Praia
Graciosa has two main villages and the choice between them shapes the experience of the stay.
Santa Cruz da Graciosa, the island capital, is the better base for most visitors. It has the highest concentration of restaurants and cafes, the island museum, the main pharmacy, and the starting point for most tour operators running trips to Furna do Enxofre and the Caldeira. Staying in Santa Cruz means you can walk to dinner and walk back without needing a car. It also puts you closer to the northwest coast and Ponta da Barca.
Vila da Praia, on the south coast, is where the windmills are. The converted windmill accommodations sit above the village with views of Praia Islet and the Atlantic. The beaches of Praia de São Mateus and Praia do Barro Vermelho are within walking distance, and the queijadas factory is a few minutes on foot. The trade-off is fewer restaurants and services; an evening in Vila da Praia is quieter than Santa Cruz, which suits some visitors and frustrates others.
Since the island takes under 30 minutes to drive across, neither base cuts you off from the other's attractions. The choice is more about ambience than logistics.
Inatel Graciosa Resort and Business Hotel
The only full-service hotel on the island. The Inatel Graciosa is a 4-star property with 44 rooms, set above Santa Cruz with views over the Bay of Porto da Barra. Porto da Barra beach is a 5-minute walk from the hotel entrance.
The facilities are more complete than anything else on Graciosa: free breakfast included, free parking, restaurant, bar, fitness room, massage and treatment rooms, a business center, and an airport shuttle service. Room service is available. For visitors who want a conventional hotel experience with reliable amenities, this is the only property on the island that delivers it.
The hotel's position above the bay gives most rooms an ocean view. The building is modern and functional rather than characterful, but the setting makes up for the architecture.

Check Availability →Windmill Accommodation
Graciosa has more windmills than any other island in the Azores. Several have been converted into rental accommodation. Two are available through Azores Getaways:
Mó da Praia is situated in Vila da Praia, two minutes on foot from the beach. The windmill overlooks Praia Islet, which means guests watch the sun set over the islet from their accommodation every evening. The interior is simple and compact, as windmill towers are, but the views and the experience of sleeping inside a converted mill are the draw.
Boina de Vento is in Santa Cruz da Graciosa, which gives the windmill accommodation the convenience of the capital's restaurants and services while keeping the character of the traditional structure. The position in Santa Cruz makes it a practical alternative to the Inatel for visitors who want something more unusual without sacrificing the town's amenities.
BOOK A WINDMILL STAY
Two converted windmills available to book: Mó da Praia (near the beach in Vila da Praia) and Boina de Vento (in Santa Cruz). Both are unique to Graciosa and book quickly in peak season.
Guesthouses and Rural Accommodation
Beyond the Inatel and the windmills, Graciosa has a modest selection of guesthouses (casas de hóspedes) and rural tourism properties distributed across the island. These tend to be family-run, smaller, and more variable in what they offer. Some include breakfast; most do not have on-site restaurants. They suit self-sufficient travelers who are comfortable with simpler facilities and prefer a more local experience.
Availability at these properties fluctuates, and online listings are not always up to date. Booking through a local travel agency or contacting the island's tourism office can help identify options not visible on standard platforms.
Booking Tips
Graciosa's accommodation total is small. In July and August, all three main property types (Inatel, windmills, guesthouses) fill up. Booking 3 to 4 weeks ahead for peak season is the minimum; 6 to 8 weeks is safer for the windmills, which have limited units and high repeat-visitor demand.
Outside peak season, a 1 to 2 week lead time is generally sufficient. Some rural properties close in winter or reduce availability; confirm directly before finalizing plans for November through February visits.
Graciosa Island Vacation Packages
Flights, accommodation, and rental car arranged together. Graciosa pairs naturally with São Miguel, or as part of the central islands circuit with São Miguel and Terceira. Accommodation is pre-selected and confirmed before you travel.
